2023: Building a Company to Enter Foreign Markets

In early September 2023, it became known about the creation by the Medsi group of two companies - International Healthcare and Medsi Medicine of Competencies - to enter the markets of the UAE, Serbia, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and several other CIS countries.

Medsi used the Madrid Agreement on International Trademark Registration when registering brands abroad, said Maria Aronikova, head of trademark practice, partner of Semenov & Pevzner. The document protects the brand in all countries participating in the agreement. In this case, the copyright holder must use trademarks within three years after registration so as not to lose them.

According to Nikolai Bespalov, Development Director of RNC Pharma, now clinics want to enter the market of those countries where solvent Russians live. For example, Russian relocants in Dubai face a language barrier, and prefer Russian-speaking doctors, which makes this market attractive for domestic clinics.

Bespalov explains the company's desire to enter the market of post-Soviet countries by moving there solvent Russians after mobilization in the fall of 2022. They are accustomed to a certain level of service in private medical centers, but in post-Soviet countries it is not so high. According to him, the formed demand for such services with a limited supply and attracts Russian networks to these markets.

However, there are a number of obstacles. In the UAE there are international operators, for example, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and in the local market, on the contrary, there is high competition. In some CIS countries, the medical business is difficult to develop because there are differences in legislation and there are not enough qualified specialists. The expert also believes that in the future, market participants may face difficulties if remotely working relocants are limited and there are problems with making payments.[1]
