History
According to the Financial Times, RTP Ventures opened its own office in New York in September 2011, on the 25th floor of the business center on Third Avenue.
This venture capital fund was headed by Kirill Sheinkman, a former investor in Greycroft Partners and co-founder of Plumtree Software, bought by Oracle. Sheinkman is a native of St. Petersburg, who moved to the United States before the collapse of the USSR and received a technical education at Stanford, and an MBA in Berkeley. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sheinkman was engaged in sales at Oracle and then met Leonid Boguslavsky, the future owner of Ru-Net Holdings, and then left for the venture capital business. This summer, Boguslavsky convinced Sheinkman to head Ru-Net Technology Partners (RTP Ventures).
RTP Ventures capital amounted to $100 million. The company's website states that the target amount of the fund is $750 million. According to Sheinkman, the remaining more than $600 million can be invested in startups of later stages of development. He emphasizes that the fund will be created in full accordance with the samples of Silicon Valley.
According to analysts, having opened a venture capital fund in the United States, Boguslavsky will follow in the footsteps of another famous IT investor from Russia, Yuri Milner, who, through his DST investment fund, has already acquired significant shares in such prominent Internet companies as Facebook, Zynga, Airbnb and Groupon.
However, unlike Milner, who mainly buys back shares of large companies already held from their employees, Boguslavsky plans to approach the work of the venture capital fund more traditionally, investing amounts from $1 million to $10 million in promising startups at an early stage.
"Starting investments during the 1999-2000 internet bubble, I learned that if you make good investments, then time does not matter and the market situation does not matter, especially if you invest in real business models at an early stage," Boguslavsky added.
