2021: Alibaba created the company for development of electric vehicles
In the middle of January, 2021 Alibaba in cooperation with Saic Motor state company and investment fund of development of high technologies of the regional government of Shanghai created the company for development of electric vehicles. Result of partnership the first completely electric Alibaba sedan within the new IM brand.
At the same time the IM brand is a part of joint venture which includes Alibaba, SAIC Motor and Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development. These three companies officially began joint venture on December 25, 2020. SAIC is the largest shareholder owning 54% of stocks while Alibaba and Shanghai Zhangjiang own on 18%.
The new IM brand is decrypted as Intelligence in Motion - thereby developers show that in the electric vehicle Alibaba the priority is given to artificial intelligence. The electrosedan is delivered with the battery from Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), and this battery has more high density of a charge, than other goods in the market. According to the Chinese association of car makers, car sale with new power sources in China, including electric vehicles, hybrid models and hydrogen cars, in 2020 grew by 11% — up to 1.36 million cars.[1]
