2024: Information on the creation of a data center
At the end of March 2024, it became known that OpenAI and Microsoft will build a new data center (DPC) to solve resource-intensive problems in the field of artificial intelligence. A project called Stargate is estimated at $100 billion.
According to The Information, OpenAI and Microsoft are implementing a large-scale program for the development of AI infrastructure, covering the period until 2030. The Stargate initiative provides for the construction of a data center with a capacity of up to 5 GW. It is assumed that alternative sources, including nuclear energy, will be used to power. These could be small nuclear reactors: Microsoft has already formed a team to work on such plants. At the same time, the head of OpenAI Sam Altman supports Oklo, which is engaged in projects in the field of nuclear power, in particular, solutions for data centers.
OpenAI and Microsoft are designing several supercomputers for AI tasks. One of them will be commissioned in 2026, after which the companies will focus on the Stargate project. It is planned to open this site approximately in 2028. It is assumed that the complex will use powerful accelerators - cards based on next-generation NVIDIA or AMD GPUs or products based on proprietary chips.
We always plan the next generation infrastructure platforms necessary to further expand the capabilities of artificial intelligence, a Microsoft spokesman said. |
Together, all upcoming OpenAI and Microsoft projects are estimated at about $115 billion. The companies will implement advanced technical solutions, including high-density racks for server equipment and new cooling systems that provide high energy efficiency.[1]
