The chief of the operational headquarters of the Melody intelligence center of the 88th Espanyola volunteer brigade with the call sign Chukcha spoke about the new technology in an interview with TASS. According to him, during the hostilities, both sides use a large number of unmanned aerial vehicles, and the density of strike UAVs in the sky is "off scale." In such conditions, the use of drone swarm technology increases the chances of a successful mission. It is noted that the new Russian system demonstrates "high potential for use."

The Russian army began to use drone swarm technology in a special operation

Drone swarm technology involves combining a large number of drones into a group. In the case of a combat mission, this creates certain difficulties for the enemy air defense system. As a result, the survivability of individual drones increases.

In addition, in the Chasov Yar area, the forces of the 88th Espanyola Brigade use other advanced technical developments. These are, in particular, FPV drones with machine vision, network-centric drone control technologies, as well as new types of devices. The goal is to "unpleasantly surprise the opponent with their technical innovations every day."

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, on October 23, 2024, from the beginning of the special military operation, the following were destroyed: 646 enemy aircraft, 283 helicopters, 34,173 unmanned aerial vehicles, 583 anti-aircraft missile systems, 18,769 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles, 1,478 multiple launch rocket fighting vehicles, 16,607 field artillery and mortar guns, 27,497 units of special military automotive equipment.[1]

How the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation adapt the intercepted drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for military operations

In early October 2024, it became known that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation were adapting the intercepted drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for their own needs. In particular, shot down Ukrainian drones are used to help Russian fighters on the front line.

According to the Izvestia newspaper, the Russian military disassemble some intercepted drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for spare parts, while others are used to deliver food and ammunition to servicemen. It is noted that drones are difficult to track due to their small size and relatively high flight speed. This makes drones an advantageous way to deliver food and ammunition. For example, Ukrainian drones "Baba-Yaga" with a large carrying capacity can be used for these purposes.

Drone kamikaze "Lancet"

According to him, after a shell from a large-caliber gun hits the dugout, the infantry usually leaves it. After that, mortars or FPV drones continue to work against the forces of Ukraine.

The active use of such drones by the Russian army did not go unnoticed in the West either. A publication appeared on the pages of the American Forbes magazine stating that Russian kamikaze drones began to be used for direct infantry fire support. The author of the material is David Ex, a military columnist for the publication.

Drones packed with explosives are one of the most important weapons on both sides, a foreign analyst noted. They are used against assault units and rear columns, attack artillery batteries and air defense positions, strike at air bases at a distance of tens or even hundreds of kilometers from the front line.

The American analyst refers to the data of the independent group Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT), which analyzed the assault on Ukrainian positions. As noted in the CIT, during the attack on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, four Russian paratroopers were seen using FPV drones. During the first use of drones, a machine gunner and three other servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were eliminated. Subsequently, the second trench was attacked. Drones continued to strike. How Russia uses first-person guided combat drones

On October 11, 2023, the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCBR) spoke about the scenarios for the use of military drones with first-person control (FPV).

File:Aquote1.png
There are 20 scenarios for the combat use of FPV drones, but it is impossible to master them all during training. When the guys are sent to us for training, clear tasks come from the command - what scenarios to teach them. For example, escorting columns, reconnaissance activities or assault operations in the city, "Dmitry Kuzyakin, director general of the center, told TASS.
File:Aquote2.png

CCBR spoke about scenarios for the use of military drones with first-person control

According to him, the most popular scenario is "Assault Actions in the City."

File:Aquote1.png
Instead of going to the firing line and scaling the enemy, you calmly raise FPV drones in a quarter and do not carry the city like artillery, but very delicately, trying not to harm anyone, you destroy only combat crews, flying into the windows of buildings and even move inside them, - said the head of the organization.
File:Aquote2.png

Another scenario - "Carousel" - is used to destroy manpower and armored vehicles, for which several drones are used at once.

File:Aquote1.png
Devices equipped with suspended ammunition fly to a given point in turn, creating a permanent conveyor for dropping shells at the enemy's location, Kuzyakin said.
File:Aquote2.png

The CCBR notes that in 2023, the Russian military in the WVO zone is increasingly using the so-called FPV drones. Unlike conventional UAVs, they are practically invulnerable, can work in any weather in the most inaccessible places and hit targets with sniper accuracy, the center noted.

They added that FPV drones for military purposes can be used to perform the following tasks:

General Designer of Kronstadt JSC Nikolai Dolzhenkov - about drones in the "war of the future" and "non-biological man"

  • The use of drones in Nagorno-Karabakh - we really have a successful demonstration of the unpunished use of unmanned technologies in hostilities against an unprepared enemy. On the one hand, these technologies really allow you to hit targets without risk to your own soldiers and pilots. On the other hand, the level of weapons that the troops of Nagorno-Karabakh had, of course, did not correspond to the modern level. And I would call it a "brilliant" marketing demonstration to increase the rating of export potential. And against modern "Shells" this story would not have passed.
  • But this is a very good illustration of the trend that prevails in the world today in this direction. That is, the robotization of means of warfare is the main global trend.
  • Unmanned aerial complexes in the future are a neural network, the elements of which can interact with each other. Moreover, this network will be multi-level, starting from the mission computer inside the aircraft and ending with the interaction between aircraft in the territory of combat operations. This is the main goal that you need to strive for.
  • Now the human-machine circuit has been implemented and works quite effectively, and people are making a decision only at the upper level now. We have most of the processes automated, but should be autonomized.
  • Our main task is not wings or engines at all, nor configuration, nor even technology in the traditional sense of the word - although we have reached the level of developed technologies. Without exaggeration, the technologies that we use in Orion are quite modern and are largely not inferior to the world level.
  • We still need to pull up on target loads, element base, power plants. But in terms of the general level of technology, we are not inferior. I say this as a person who has seen similar foreign examples of this technique - the same Turkish, Chinese, Israeli and American devices.
  • From the outside, it is very important what kind of "nuts," bombs, engine, target loads and weapons are there. Yes, this is important, without this it is also impossible to do anything. But, I repeat once again, this is already an adjective. And the noun is how we teach our systems to think. This is the most important thing now in the drone!
  • It is necessary to create a system that, firstly, is able to make decisions in a rapidly changing environment without operator intervention. Secondly, learn from the own experience and experience of other, related systems. They, like nerve cells, must be connected to each other. This should be a collective experience in which the program is self-improving, and also without human intervention.
  • I'll tell you more. I believe that biological civilization is only an intermediate link to a non-biological civilization. An inevitable branch of development, since machines are more adapted to the environment than humans and biological creatures in general. Therefore, it will be a normal outgrowth.
  • First, components will be replaced in a person, and then he himself will become the entire artificial one. And this will be the next stage of civilizational development, if before that the biological species does not self-destruct.

The first anti-drone unit appeared in the Russian Armed Forces

The first permanent anti-drone unit has been formed in the Western Military District

On the basis of a separate electronic warfare connection of the Western Military District (EW ZVO), the first permanent tactical unit for combating unmanned aircraft was formed. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation[17][18][19][20].

According to the commander of the electronic warfare unit of the Western Military District, Colonel Alexander Vostrikov, this unit is unique in its kind. All military personnel have unique professional skills and technical knowledge in the field of electronic warfare.

The company is based on contract servicemen, sergeants and officers. Training activities are beyond the training periods of line units. According to Vostrikov, in fact, the intensity and quality of training is comparable to the training of special forces units. To work out practical tasks during the exercises, decommissioned military drones and special flying targets are used.

In total, about 20 special forces have been created. They include air defense, aviation and sniper units of the Western Military District.

"Kalashnikov" showed in action his gun against drones

As part of the Army 2017 forum in Kubinka, the Kalashnikov concern showed its REX 1 gun, which can be used to shoot down drones and jam mobile and Wi-Fi signals. The gun will receive both civilian and military use.

According to the developers' plan, weapons can be used both by civilians to protect private territory and by law enforcement agencies, for example, at public events. It can be used at a distance of up to two kilometers against flying, floating or ground-based drone robots. A gun can be used to force the drone to land. Here's how it works:

The weapon is equipped with a collimator sight, which provides a very high aiming speed - about 2-3 times higher than conventional ones. In addition, the kit includes replaceable GPS and GLONASS suppression units, a tactical handle and various attachments: a strobe scanner, a laser guidance system and an audio and video recorder.

The device is also capable of suppressing GSM signals and Wi-Fi 5.8 and 2.4 gigahertz. Thus, the gun can be used against improvised explosive devices, which are often activated using a mobile phone. The gun allows you to plug all incoming signals to the device and, thus, prevent an explosion.

Drone biathlon at the Army-2017 forum

In August 2017, within the framework of the Army-2017 international military-technical forum, the second drone biathlon championship will be held, at which small drone operators will compete in the ability to control drones. The first drone biathlon took place in 2016: it was organized jointly by the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Foundation for Advanced Research.

In 2017, drone biathlon competitions will be held in qualitatively different conditions compared to 2016: in particular, if earlier drones competed in shooting at conditional targets, this time the targets will be fixed at real objects of military equipment. Drones will have to pass complex tracks with obstacles at high speed, as well as perform tasks in conditions of difficult availability of targets. In addition, the list of nominations will be expanded and a number of restrictions on the technical characteristics of drones will be lifted: today the developers use various platforms and materials to create drones, which allows them to create truly unique devices. Holding competitions, in particular, in the format of drone biathlon, allows you to highlight the most promising solutions and ideas, as well as create opportunities for their development.

Igor Denisov,
Deputy General Director - Head of Physical and Technical Research at the Advanced Research Fund, talks about the development of technologies in the field of creating and managing unmanned aerial vehicles: "As last year, the drone biathlon championship will be a competition not of autonomous drones, but of UAV operators. There are practically no professional drone operators today: mostly passionate youth participate in the competition. Meanwhile, in real conditions, drone operators are required to be able not only to control a drone, but also to simultaneously solve other important and necessary tasks: to detect and recognize the target, solve information problems, make decisions related to the use of fire, and determine the damage caused. " It is planned that next year universities and other educational organizations of the Russian Ministry of Defense will be involved in the drone biathlon
.

According to Igor Denisov, the key issues in the context of the development of unmanned aerial vehicles today are the autonomy of drones, the management of groups of vehicles (swarm technologies) and energy saving issues. According to him, in the near future drones will have more and more autonomy, and the operator's tasks will be reduced: they will mainly consist in correctly setting tasks for a group of drones.

"The area of
the nearest development of unmanned aerial vehicles is everything related to artificial intelligence: vision technologies, distributed control issues in a group of drones, effective task execution by devices that independently coordinate with each other, exchange information and solve a common problem," - notes Igor Denisov.

When it comes to drone flights over long distances and the transportation of goods, the issue of power supply of devices is also relevant. In the future, solar energy technologies, fuel cells, hydrogen power, etc. can be used for these purposes. Considerable attention is paid to the economic aspects, in particular, the creation of functional low-cost drones.

The Advanced Research Foundation is developing a concept and competition program for autonomous drones, including those grouped on the principle of swarm control. It is expected that in the coming years autonomous drones will be able to compete in solving various problems not only under the control of a human operator, but also acting independently and competing with a person, including in those tasks that only a person can solve today.
