2024: Creation of the Omut AI Laboratory

T-Bank AI Research and Central University are opening a joint Omut AI laboratory for basic research in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM). The name Omut AI is a metaphor for "deep" learning. T-Bank announced this on July 23, 2024.

The purpose of creating a laboratory is to research and develop innovative approaches and methods that will help ensure the continuous control and safety of AI, its compliance with public expectations, standards of ethics and reliability.

Scientists from T-Bank AI Research help talented students make scientific discoveries and are already in charge of a research laboratory at MIPT, which combines fundamental and applied projects in key technological domains. Now, on the basis of the Omut AI laboratory, students of the Central University will be able to join the projects of scientists. They will focus on the following areas of research:

• AI Alignment. Scientists will combine expertise at the intersection of natural language processing (NLP), reinforcement learning (RL) and other areas of computer science to ensure AI behavior is predictable and doesn't get out of human control, matching its needs and values.
• LLM Foundations - search for more effective architectures for creating large language models from scratch, research into the basic principles and methods of improving their thinking abilities.
• Multimodal AI is a study of methods for creating universal models that can interact with humans using several modalities: text, sound and vision.

One of the principles of the laboratory is open research, the results of which will be available to the entire scientific and industrial community. The results of the experiments will become the basis for breakthrough discoveries in various fields, ranging from natural sciences to practical developments.

In the future, with a successful internship in the laboratory, Central University students will be able to join the T-Bank AI Research group. Scientists will also take part in the creation and teaching of AI courses at the university.
