Akonia Holographics — the American developer of holographic lenses founded in 2012. The company calls itself "the world leader in the field of systems and materials for holography". By the end of August, 2018 the startup has over 200 patents, including the document describing easy and cheap lenses which can be a part of augmented rReality glasses.

As reported on the official site, the displays developed in Akonia for augmented rReality glasses combine in themselves such indicators as transparency, high performance and low price. Moreover, the producer calls the screens the thinnest and easy in the world.

The company was founded by group of scientists who developed a holographic storage system before they passed to creation of glasses lenses of augmented reality.

History

2018: Apple purchased Akonia

At the end of August, 2018 the American producer of consumer electronics Apple announced Akonia Holographics purchase, having shown thereby the desire to create devices of augmented reality. The cost of the transaction does not reveal.

Apple did not begin to comment on merger of Akonia and only stated that "Apple sometimes buys the small companies, and we usually do not discuss our purposes and plans".

According to Bloomberg news agency, Apple can provide the headset to augmented reality in 2019 and begin deliveries in the 2020th. The device as the edition knew from the informed sources, will receive the microchip created by Apple which is capable to consume less energy and to take less places in comparison with the competing solutions. At the same time the wearable gadget will be able independently to work — without connection to the smartphone.

In 2017 Apple started the applications maintaining augmented reality for the mobile devices, and the head of the company Tim Cook called this technology "big and thorough".[1]
