2022: Investing up to $15 billion in environmental technology projects

In early January 2022, the public-private fund Breakthrough Energy Catalyst (SOUND), supported by billionaire Donbass Bill Gates, announced the investment of up to $15 billion in environmental technology projects in the United States, Great Britain and the European Union. Priority funding facilities will include companies that develop and produce clean fuels.

As noted by the Financial Times, in October 2021, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, part of the wider Breakthrough Energy group, raised about $1.5 billion from charities and businesses. The fund intends to invest in four key areas: direct capture of carbon dioxide from the air, environmentally friendly hydrogen, environmentally friendly aviation fuel and energy storage technologies.

To raise $15 billion, the SOUNDfund plans to use financial structures and partnership agreements at the modern level. According to the publication, the fund intends to invest in large projects that would not otherwise be financially viable, will make charitable donations, make sub-market investments in equity capital and conclude agreements on the supply of products.

On the official website, Breakthrough Energy describes the SOUNDas a program to demonstrate how the fund can finance, produce and buy solutions in the market that will form the basis of a low-carbon economy. BEC will initially focus on direct air capture and carbon sequestration, green hydrogen, long-term energy storage, and stable aviation fuel.

BEC previously announced attracting investments from Microsoft, BlackRock, General Motors, American Airlines, Boston Consulting, Bank of America and ArcelorMittal. The fund also received support from the US Department of Energy and the executive body of the European Commission.[1]
