Details about the purchase of Navitel by MTS
On April 25, 2023, it became known that the operator MTS disclosed the details of the acquisition of the Navitel group of companies Russian provider navigation and cartographic solutions.
According to CNews, referring to MTS documents, the operator acquired 50.85% in Navitel for 690 million rubles. Thus, the entire company is valued at 1.35 billion rubles. It is known that the legal entity of Navitel is the Center for Navigation Technologies JSC (CNT). After installing the program, the user had to send SMS a message to a short number to receive the activation code. The cost of the message was 300, rubles while the price of a legally distributed product was 2.4 thousand rubles. Thus, the damage caused to the copyright holder amounted to over 90 million rubles. Navitel has already announced its intention to go to court with a claim for damages.
In addition to the fact that the downloaded unlicensed program worked incorrectly, when it was installed on smartphones, it performed malicious functions, that is, secretly sent SMS to shortcodes from the user, as a result of which there was a regular unauthorized debiting of funds from the account.
The investigation opened a criminal case under Art. 146 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (copyright infringement). The police identified several members of the criminal group. Three of them are under recognizance not to leave. These are residents of Saratov with programming skills, according to the materials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
