2021: Establishing a Company

In early October 2021, it became known about the creation of the Ozon Alko company, through which the Ozon marketplace will sell alcoholic beverages. Data on the new legal entity are contained in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities.

The main activity of the company is the wholesale trade in drinks, and among the additional ones is the retail trade in alcoholic beverages in specialized stores.

If and when the remote sale of alcohol is allowed by law, we want to be as ready as possible and have a license on hand, the Ozon press service told Interfax, commenting on the registration of Ozon Alko.

The company added that thanks to the new project, it is planned to provide customers with an expanded assortment.

Ozon formed a company to sell alcohol

In August 2021, Ozon launched the possibility of booking wines and strong drinks in SimpleWine stores. Buyers can pick up the booked item from the licensed point of delivery with proof of majority.

The sale of alcohol online has been banned in Russia since 2007. In August 2021, the Ministry of Finance proposed from 2022 to conduct an experiment on the sale of Russian wine through the Russian Post website in order to analyze the possibility of lifting the ban on retail online sales of alcohol. It was assumed that the initiative will be extended to drinks produced 100% from grapes grown in Russia. The Ministry of Finance believed that the experiment would allow the authorities to assess the feasibility of lifting the ban on the online sale of alcohol in the country.

The Association of Internet Trading Companies (AKIT, including Wildberries, Ozon, M.Video - Eldorado, X5 Group and other companies) and Sberbank previously advocated lifting the ban on the remote sale of alcohol.

By October 5, 2021, online platforms like Ozon can work with alcoholic beverages as storefronts, where buyers choose goods and book them, and then take them from a supplier.[1]
