The history of the Academic Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories began with the formation in 1988. under the guidance of prof. A.K. Tembotov research group of the Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Animal Ecology of the USSR Academy of Sciences on the basis of KBSU. In 1992 this structure was transformed into the Kabardino-Balkarian ecological station IEMEZ of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which became part of the RAS, formed in 1993. On the basis of this station and the North Caucasian geographical station of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 246 of 27.12.1994), the Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences was organized. Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.K. Tembotov, elected in 1996, was appointed Organizing Director. Director of the IEGT RAS. Scientific and scientific and methodological management of the Institute is carried out by the Department of Biological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 2012, in order to perpetuate the memory of a prominent scientist in the field of evolutionary ecology and biogeography of mountain territories, the organizer and first director of the Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Aslanbi Kazievich Tembotov, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences decided to assign the name of Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.K. Tembotov to the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science Institute of Ecology of Mountain. The initiative to assign the name of an outstanding Caucasian scientist to the Academic Institute came from associates, colleagues and loved ones, as mentioned at a round table dedicated to the memory of A.K. Tembotov in 2007. Since 2004, the Institute has been headed by F.A. Tembotova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
