2010: Briefing on the closure of Sberkart CJSC

On October 28, 2010, the central office of Sberbank of Russia held a briefing by Viktor Orlovsky, Senior Vice President of the Bank, on the closure of Sberkart CJSC. The main reason for the closure of the system was called the outdated technologies on which this project was based.

The decision to liquidate Sberkart, established by the bank together with other shareholder companies, was made on August 20, 2010. This step was due to the loss-making of this company. As V. Orlovsky explained, Sberbank of Russia was practically the only card issuer and acquirer: the remaining banks participating in the system for the entire existence of Sberkart CJSC, that is, since 2005, issued only about 3 thousand Sberkart, while the issue of Sberbank of Russia itself amounted to several million such cards.

The weak activity of issuing banks included in the system did not allow Sberkart to receive income from servicing interbank transactions on the cards of the system. According to the calculations of the senior vice president of Sberbank of Russia, the monthly income of the joint-stock company was only a few tens of thousands of rubles per month and did not allow to recoup overhead costs.

At the same time, V. Orlovsky emphasized that it was the joint-stock company that was unprofitable, the very project for issuing and acquiring Sberkart by Sberbank of Russia brought and brings stable income to the bank.

According to estimates of V. Orlovsky, Sberkart CJSC will cease to exist before the end of 2010. At the moment, the valuation of the company's property has been completed and the procedure for its sale has been agreed. According to V. Orlovsky, part of the assets of the liquidated company will be bought by Universal Electronic Card OJSC: the newly formed company will acquire the Sberkart and ORPS brands and equipment for servicing Sberkart, which will continue to serve the holders of the system cards issued by various banks.

The fate of Sberkart, issued by Sberbank itself, is also determined: the issue of these cards is suspended, there is a planned replacement of Sberkart with PRO100 cards or electronic cards of international payment systems (at the request of the client). At the moment, customers have about 1.5 million Sberkart left in their hands.
