In MIAN basic, exploratory and application scientific research in the field of mathematics, mechanics, theoretical physics and information science in the directions is conducted: the bases of mathematics and a logic theory, the number theory, algebra, geometry, topology, algebraic geometry, the material, complex and functional analysis, ordinary differential equations, including optimum control and the dynamic systems, differential equations in private derivatives, mathematical physics, probability theory, mathematical statistics, discrete mathematics, including theoretical cryptography, theoretical information science, a quantum mechanics, the quantum field theory, mathematical problems of elementary particle physics, statistical physics, mathematical problems of mechanics, information and analytical systems in the field of natural sciences, promoting and promotion of mathematics. MIAN makes a fundamental contribution to the specified fields of mathematics, mechanics, theoretical physics and information science.

Scientific research in MIAN is conducted within the state task, projects of the Russian scientific fund, the Russian Federal Property Fund, tenders on the state support of the leading schools of sciences, scientific research of young Russian scientists – candidates and doctors of science, the Russian President's grants to the young scientist and graduate students performing perspective research and development in the priority directions of upgrade of the Russian economy, programs of basic researches and target expenses of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Results of researches are published in the leading international and Russian scientific magazines, regularly join in the list of the major achievements of the Russian scientists in the field of mathematics, are reported on the international and European mathematical congresses, at numerous Russian and international conferences.
