Fine of 1 million rubles for LGBT demonstration

On July 13, 2023, the Ostankino District Court of Moscow fined an online cinema 1 million rubles for demonstrating LGBT content among minors. The company was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 2 of Art. 6.21.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation (dissemination among minors of information demonstrating unconventional sexual relations). The maximum punishment under this article provides for a fine in the amount of 1 million to 4 million rubles or suspension of activities for up to 90 days.

The reason for initiating an administrative case was the incorrect age marking of the Italian film "Ideal Strangers" - "16 +" instead of "18 +." In a comment to the Telegram channel "Caution, News," a company representative said that the labeling was corrected back in April 2023, when the service received a claim from Roskomnadzor.

The article under which ivi was fined was introduced into the Code of Administrative Offenses in 2022. According to it, video and streaming services are brought to justice. The law prohibits the promotion of "non-traditional sexual relations" among all citizens, regardless of age. Such materials cannot be placed in the media, Internet, advertising, literature and cinema. In the second part of the article, MegaFon and Start, as well as Movix, Peers.TV and Premier services, were previously fined.[1]

Start the automatic function of skipping the splash screen and credits

On April 18, 2022, the IVI Online Cinema announced the launch of an automatic function for skipping screensavers and credits. It allows you to watch episode after episode without being distracted by screensavers and end credits. So far, the function is only available for Smart TV, but in the future subscribers of all platforms will be able to use it.

The function of automatically skipping the splash screen and credits will be especially relevant for those who like to watch an entire season in one sitting or simply cannot break away from their favorite series and arrange continuous marathons for several episodes. IVI strives to save users time and gives them the opportunity to skip the same type of screensavers and credits. Now you don't have to reach for the remote or mouse computer to move on to the next episode. When the events of the previous series end, the pre-boot of the next one starts, which makes the transition as fast as possible and allows the viewer to remain completely immersed in the universe of his favorite series.

The function is an evolution of manual skipping of credits and screensavers that appeared in IVI applications several years ago. Since its launch, it has enjoyed great popularity among viewers of the online cinema, and the company decided to automate it for the most comfortable viewing. It will become indispensable for those who want to save time watching TV shows and not be distracted by rewinding screensavers and credits.

File:Aquote1.png
We know that users on average watch 2-3 episodes at a time and often perform routine actions to switch episodes and skip credits and screensavers. At the same time, many series serve as a background for doing household chores, and the search for a remote control only distracts viewers from their activities or immersion in the atmosphere of the series, "said Artem Lebedev, Deputy General Director for Product Development IVI. - We are constantly working to improve the experience of our users and try to make sure that every viewer of the platform gets the most out of seamless content viewing, and therefore we are the first on the market to automatically skip identical credits and screensavers.

Ivi enlists JP Morgan Chase to prepare for IPO

At the end of January 2020, it became known about Ivi's plans to enter the American stock exchange. In preparation for the IPO, the Russian online cinema was attracted by the investment bank JP Morgan Chase.

On which site Ivi intends to place its securities, it is not reported, but, according to Kommersant, the choice is made in favor of Nasdaq. The IPO should take place in 2020.

Online cinema ivi to go public on Nasdaq

As one of the sources told the publication, the successful IPO of the recruiting service Headhunter in May 2019 spurred on active preparations for the placement of ivi. According to a top manager in the media market, earlier going public for online movie theater was only a plan, but now it has become a "priority task."

In 2019, ivi did not want to come under the control of a strategic investor, because it planned to "attract investments, increase the content base, raise its value, and then go public," said a source close to one of the shareholders of the online cinema.

File:Aquote1.png
They need money for development, and new investors do not come in, "the source explains.
File:Aquote2.png

Another interlocutor of the newspaper believes that the content market is becoming "very capital-intensive and heated," while ivi, unlike its main competitors, has been left without a large partner and outside ecosystems, so it becomes more vulnerable, which pushes it to seek investment or prepare for an IPO.

The analyst Finam Group of Companies Leonid Delitsyn estimates Ivi's value at $720 million, citing a competing service multiplier Netflix and projected ivi revenue for 2019. According to the expert, underwriters in an IPO are likely to value it at $700-800 million.

Earlier, the general director and founder of Ivi, Oleg Tumanov, repeatedly spoke about the possibility of the company going public. In 2018, it was about an IPO by 2020, if the next collapse of the ruble does not happen.[6]

1 billion rubles for the production of own TV series

The ivi online cinema intends to invest in the production of its own TV series. In the coming year, the video service is ready to invest 1 billion rubles in such projects. The production will be carried out by the ivi Originals division created in May, said Oleg Tumanov, general director of the online cinema. ivi plans to work with different formats, Vadim Levin, ivi production director, told RBC in May. These are mini-series for a young audience with the timing of one episode for 5-10 minutes, and large series with the participation of stars.

By the end of 2019, ivi will launch about ten mini-series, five premium series, ten full-length films, two of which are in partnership with foreign studios, says Vadim Levin.

According to him, it is planned to attract leading producers to shoot their own projects. In particular, they are now at the final stage of an agreement with the general director of World Russian Studios Yuri Sapronov (TV series Walking Through the Torment, Dzhuna, Personal Matter of Captain Ryumin), negotiations are also underway with the founder of the production company Sreda Alexander Tsekalo (TV series Trotsky, Gogol, Sparta). ivi plans to shoot a series about ethnic drug addiction in Moscow - "South-West" with "World Russian Studios." A joint project with Environment has not yet been defined.

The situation in the video services market is pushing to invest in ivi's own production. Its volume is increasing every year, but competition is also increasing, explains Oleg Tumanov. According to him, it is possible to attract a new and retain the existing audience by releasing its own unique content: as evidenced by international experience, leading companies, in particular Netflix, are now following this path.

The bet on original programming allows the service to strengthen the brand, as well as attract new viewers and retain an existing audience, Netflix said in its 2018 report. The company warned investors about possible risks: in the case of its own production projects, the final result may not meet expectations.
