2025: Development of the first Russian skin bioequivalents for rapid recovery after transplantation
In October 2025, clinical trials of the first domestic tissue engineering drugs intended for the restoration of skin began in Russia.
On the development of specialists of the Institute of Biology of Development. N.K. Koltsov RAS reports the website of the Ministry of Science and the Higher formations Russian Federation. We are talking about two innovative products: biological skin equivalent (SEC) and dermal skin equivalent (DEC). Both drugs are created according to the principles of tissue engineering and are donor human skin cells grown on a special basis. The full cycle of preclinical studies has already confirmed their effectiveness and safety.
SEC containing both dermal and epidermal cells is indicated for the treatment of extensive grade II-III burns. Its use not only stimulates the regeneration of the patient's own skin, but also improves the engraftment of transplanted skin flaps in autodermoplasty. This minimizes the formation of rough scars, and also reduces the time and cost of therapy compared to traditional methods.
DEC is a more economical solution with a wide range of applications. It is effective for healing trophic ulcers, wounds, including after skin transplantation, and various cosmetic defects.
According to PharmMedProm, in the future this development will form the basis for the creation of a national bank of skin grafts. This will expand the treatment of skin damage in areas such as reconstructive, plastic, maxillofacial surgery, oncology, gynecology and others.
PharmMedProm also notes that tests of another product, Combi-BEK, began in 2024. This is a biosimilar of the skin for the treatment of burns, the uniqueness of which lies in the use of cells grown from the material of the patient himself.[1]
