2024: Performing the world's first aortic surgery on a working heart

In August 2024, it became known that the doctors of the Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery (FCSSH) named after S. G. Sukhanov in Perm for the first time in the world successfully performed an operation on the aorta with a working heart.

According to the Ministry of Health of the Perm Territory, operations on the aorta are considered one of the most complex and high-tech in cardiac surgery. Until August 2024, such interventions were carried out exclusively with the use of artificial circulation, which required cardiac arrest for up to several hours. However, Perm cardiac surgeons have proposed a new technique that avoids cardiac arrest and the associated risks of damage to the heart muscle.

According to "TASS," the first four successful operations on the new technology were carried out at the FTSSSH named after S. G. Sukhanov, which allows to reduce the risk of complications and increase the safety of the patient.

The operation is performed with the use of artificial circulation, which ensures the functioning of all vital organs, including the heart. Unlike the traditional method, the heart continues to work thanks to the use of special silicone cannulas, which provide coronary perfusion - a continuous blood supply to the heart. Deputy Chief Physician for Medical Affairs Andrei Marchenko explained that during the operation, the heart continues to function at the same frequency as before the intervention, which reduces the load on the body and minimizes the risk of complications.

Perm specialists also noted that operations on a working heart are not new in cardiac surgery practice. Over the years, they have been used in coronary bypass surgery and heart valve surgeries. However, surgery on the aorta with a working heart was performed for the first time in world practice.[1]
