2024: Laboratory Launch

In June 2024, it became known about the creation of an innovative scientific center in Tomsk, whose activities will be devoted to the development of advanced methods for the treatment of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other neurotic disorders. A new laboratory of neuropsychiatry was created at the Siberian State Medical University, the press service of the university said at the end of May 2024.

The main feature of research conducted in the laboratory will be the use of virtual reality technologies to create personalized rehabilitation programs. This will significantly increase the effectiveness of therapy by recreating realistic scenarios that are as close as possible to traumatic events from the patient's life.

As the head of the laboratory, Nikolai Bokhan, emphasizes, in modern society there is an alarming increase in the number of people suffering from PTSD, which has developed as a result of the loss of loved ones, domestic violence, military conflicts, terrorist attacks and other extreme situations. A special risk group is made up of participants in hostilities and members of their families.

According to the head of the laboratory, its financing in the amount of 13.5 million rubles (information for May 2024) will be carried out within the framework of the Priority 2030 program of the Science and Universities national project. In addition to developing innovative treatments for PTSD using VR technologies, the center's staff will focus on finding markers of mental disorders to predict the success of therapy.

In the future, the laboratory plans to create virtual 3D environments for cognitive behavioral and exposure therapy, as well as develop software to support medical decision-making on the choice of optimal personalized therapy based on non-invasive neuromodulation methods.
