2023: Polish prosecutors seize money from Russian embassy accounts

The Polish prosecutor's office seized money from the accounts of the Russian Embassy, said Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreev on April 26, 2023.

This is a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention, which introduced immunity on money in the accounts of embassies of countries.

Earlier, embassy accounts were frozen, allegedly on suspicion of their possible use "for the purpose of money laundering or terrorism."

Diplomats received a notification from the prosecutor's office that funds from the embassy and trade representative accounts at Santander Bank were transferred to the prosecutor's accounts. Following this, Santander reported that it had ceased cooperation with the embassy and closed accounts. We are talking about "significant funds" that were in accounts in both dollars and Polish zlotys.

2022: Plan to open new consulates

Russia plans to open consulates in the Maldives, Bali, as well as in Grodno, Aktau and Samarkand, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov in November 2022. 2021: Russian Foreign Ministry confirms cyber attack on ministry employees

On January 18, 2022, it became known about cyber attacks on employees of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the American information security companies Cluster25 (part of DuskRis) and Black Lotus Labs (part of Lumen Technologies), the North Korean hacker group Konni is allegedly behind these attacks.

According to Kommersant, a phishing campaign against Foreign Ministry employees began in October 2021. They were sent archives with documents in which they were asked to report on the status of vaccination, or links to the download of a fake "Program for registering vaccinated in the federal register." As a result, the account of one of the employees of the ministry was compromised. On December 20, 2021, New Year's congratulations on the malicious file were sent from there.

The group Konnie (APT37) has been known since 2017. In her attacks, she used, in particular, documents related to relations between Russia and the DPRK, taking texts from public sources, said Denis Kuvshinov, head of the threat research department at Positive Technologies. Kaspersky Lab cybersecurity expert Denis Legezo, in turn, said that Konnie could send a damaged pdf file: the recipient could not open it, and attackers under the guise of a reader sent him an infected program.[1]
