The Federal State Budgetary Institution "Caucasian State Natural Biosphere Reserve named after H. G. Shaposhnikov," founded in 1924, is today the largest in terms of territory and specially protected natural object in the North Caucasus. In 1999, the reserve was included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. It is located within three constituent entities of the Russian Federation - the Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Adygea and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic. The reserve employs more than 180 people, structurally included in the scientific, conservation and environmental education departments.
