Rostelecom allocates 1 billion rubles to modernize St. Petersburg communication networks

The development of the communication network takes place using GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology. It provides high data transfer speed and reliability during operation. Thanks to this, the subscriber receives high-quality digital services and services: Internet, telephone communications, IP television, as well as smart home and video surveillance services. GPON makes it easy to scale the network in the event of growing needs of subscribers, said the vice-governor of St. Petersburg Stanislav Kazarin in his Telegram channel.

{{quote 'Implementation of this project taking into account the development of our digital services ecosystem "Digital St. Petersburg" will allow Petersburgers to get unlimited digital opportunities to solve problems in the field of improvement, transport, social sphere. This is a higher level of quality of life for citizens and a more effective feedback mechanism with the authorities, the governor said. }} As a result of the modernization of the telecom infrastructure, subscribers will have access to home Internet at speeds up to 1 Gbps, as well as other network services. By the beginning of November 2022, Rostelecom serves about 800 thousand broadband access subscribers (broadband Internet access) in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, over 230 thousand IPTV subscribers.[1]

In March 2011, it was announced that the number of users of PON services (provided on the mass market under the MegaAvangard brand) in St. Petersburg exceeded 100 thousand. According to the operator NWT, the company considers PON technology as the optimal solution to meet the growing needs of customers in modern high-speed telecommunications services, as well as as an economically feasible way to systematically modernize its own communication network based on copper infrastructure. In addition to St. Petersburg, the development of the operator's network using PON technology also takes place on the territory of the so-called nearest suburbs and some settlements of the Leningrad Region. In particular, today there has been a "point" connection to the network using PON technology of a number of houses in the Vsevolozhsk district, Zelenogorsk, Kolpino, Kommunar, Kronstadt, Lomonosov, Pavlovsk, Pushkin, Sestroretsk, Gorelovo, Krasnoye Selo, Shushary and so on. One of the recently implemented projects was the completion in February 2011 of the first stage of the construction of telecommunications infrastructure based on PON technology in the Novy Okkervil residential complex (this housing estate is being built in Kudrovo). The new settlers of the residential facility "House at Birch Alley," consisting of three buildings (1,000 apartments and 30 commercial premises) and commissioned at the end of December 2010, received the opportunity to use the services from the NWT using PON technology.
