History

2024: Media Telecom bought Media1

On August 14, 2024, Kismet Capital Group, owned by businessman Ivan Tavrin, announced the sale of the assets of its media holding Media 1 (it includes, among other things, Muz-TV and Yu TV channels ).

According to Vedomosti, the buyers were Media Telecom, a joint venture between Rostelecom and the National Media Group (NMG).

The transaction, the amount of which was not disclosed, also includes the sale of the regional radio holding Choose Radio. Kirill Tanaev, director of the Institute of Modern Media, estimated that the acquired channels increase the on-air share of NMG by about 1.96 percentage points among Russians over 4 years old. He noted that the audience of the Media 1 channels mainly consists of young people, which, in his opinion, strengthens the capabilities of the NMG in working with this age group. However, Tanaev also stressed that this represents a certain challenge, since young people are spoiled by a large selection of content and their media consumption is more active and diverse compared to other age groups. As a result, according to him, the young audience is increasingly moving away from classic television in favor of various Internet activities and streaming services.

The sale of Media 1 assets is part of the group's long-term strategy to exit the media business and focus efforts on high-tech markets, the company said.
